Family Trip to Western Serbia from Dubai: Complete Travel Guide (2026)
Planning a family trip to Western Serbia from Dubai is an excellent choice for travelers looking for a budget-friendly, visa-easy European destination with stunning natural landscapes. With convenient visa-free entry options for UAE residents holding US, UK, or Schengen visas, Serbia has quickly become a popular alternative to crowded European hotspots. From the scenic mountain town of Zlatibor to the breathtaking viewpoints of Tara National Park and the iconic Šargan Eight railway in Mokra Gora, Western Serbia offers a perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and family-friendly attractions. In this travel guide, we cover everything you need to know—from visa requirements and flight options to a detailed 4-day itinerary, costs, and practical tips for a smooth journey.
Serbia Visa and Flight Planning from Dubai
Serbia is an attractive destination due to its flexible visa policies. Many nationalities enjoy visa-free access, and there is a convenient third-country exemption: travelers holding a valid multiple-entry US, UK, or Schengen visa can enter Serbia visa-free. We used our US visa for hassle-free entry.
Although Flydubai operates direct flights from Dubai to Belgrade, peak travel periods like Eid holidays can make availability limited. In our case, we opted for a connecting flight via Zurich.
- Dubai to Zurich: 6 hours 30 minutes
- Layover in Zurich: 4 hours
- Zurich to Belgrade: 1 hour 45 minutes
- Switzerland allows transit without a Schengen visa if you hold a valid US visa and have used it at least once. Frankfurt (FRA) and Zurich (ZRH) are both excellent transit hubs with frequent connections to Belgrade.
Arrival at Belgrade Airport
Immigration was smooth and efficient. The visa officer asked about our duration of stay, checked our return tickets and US visa, and stamped our passports without any issues.
Car Rental and Drive to Zlatibor
For exploring Western Serbia (Zlatibor, Mokra Gora, Tara National Park), renting a car is highly recommended. We booked with Flex To Go Car Hire:
- Airport pickup included
- Office located 5–10 minutes from the airport
- Mid-level insurance package chosen (lower deposit, slightly higher cost but safer)
- The drive from Belgrade to Zlatibor took approximately 2 hours 40 minutes via highway.
- Toll system: Collect a ticket at entry and pay at exit
- Toll cost: RSD 950
- Payment: Card or cash accepted
Accommodation in Zlatibor
We stayed at 21st Century Spa and Wellness Apartments, which is ideal for families.
- Prime location near King’s Square, Lake Park, and IN Park
- Clean and spacious apartments
- Good breakfast options
- Free outdoor parking
We arrived around 10:30 PM and rested for the night. You can book here:

First, our stop was Stopica Cave, about 40–50 minutes from Zlatibor.
- Parking: RSD 100 (cash only)
- Entry: RSD 400 (adults), free for kids under 6
The cave itself was relatively small and not very impressive, but the surrounding natural environment was pleasant.
Afterwards, we visited Gostilje National Park:
- Entry: RSD 250 (adults), free for kids under 6
- Features: Hiking trails, picnic areas, kids’ swings, lush greenery
- The highlight was Gostilje Waterfall, offering stunning views and a relaxing atmosphere—perfect for families.
After the trip, in the evening, we explored King’s Square, enjoyed the musical fountain, and had dinner before heading back.
Day 2: Šargan Eight Railway and Tara National Park, Western Serbia
Second morning, after breakfast, we drove to Mokra Gora to experience the famous Šargan Eight railway.
- Train timings: 10:00 AM, 1:30 PM, 4:10 PM
- Ticket: RSD 1500 (adults), free for kids under 6

This heritage railway offers a scenic ride through mountains and tunnels. Despite no air conditioning, the natural breeze made the journey comfortable.
We then continued to Tara National Park, one of Serbia’s most beautiful natural reserves.
Key highlights:
- Baserovina and Zelenika viewpoints
- Banjska Stena viewpoint (requires a 1 km forest walk but worth it)
- Drina River House (iconic photo spot)
- Perucac Lake and Dam
The landscapes here are dramatic, with dense forests, cliffs, and river valleys.
Day 3: Zlatibor Gold Gondola and Local Exploration
We started the day with the Zlatibor Gold Gondola, the longest panoramic gondola lift in the world.
- Total ride time: ~1 hour (round trip)
- Stops: Ribnica Lake and Tornik Mountain
- At Tornik, there is a café where you can relax and enjoy mountain views—great for photography.
Later, we explored the local market:
- Handmade souvenirs and local products
- Cash-only purchases
Prices were reasonable compared to other European destinations, making it ideal for budget-friendly shopping.
In the evening, we visited IN Park Amusement Park:
- Ferris wheel ride: RSD 300 per person
Day 4: Return to Belgrade
After breakfast, we checked out at 8:40 AM and drove back to Belgrade.
- Drive time: 2 hours 40 minutes
- Car return and airport transfer: ~10 minutes
- Our return flight to Dubai was with Flydubai.
